EXPERIMENTATIONS WITH CINEMA IN GEOGRAPHY TEACHING: ERASING HEGEMONIC IMAGES AND ENABLING NEW PERSPECTIVES ON INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN DOURADOS-MS

Abstract

This study aims to explore, through experiments with cinematic language in the context of teaching and learning Geography, new ways of imagining and perceiving geographic space. Based on the curricular guidelines of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul for secondary education, experiments were developed using cinema as a pedagogical practice integrated with the use of different languages in Geography teaching. The proposal seeks to enable alternative forms of knowledge production through diverse modes of expression. Thus, the experimentation with cinema emerged from the theme “Indigenous Peoples in Dourados-MS,” taken as both a starting point and a generator of knowledge. The text unfolds in two necessary movements: the first seeks to revisit hegemonic images and narratives regarding the presence and participation of Indigenous peoples in the territorial formation of Brazil, which are often associated with the notions of tutelage and lack of agency. The second movement invites students, through four generating themes, to reflect on local images of Indigenous peoples in our municipality, with the aim of challenging hegemonic representations and, through encounters between subjects, enabling new ways of experiencing geographic space. Finally, the study highlights the need for continuous formative processes in which universities and basic education can engage in a dialogue of ideas and practices, allowing the specificities of each subject to emerge
