Abstract

The ancestral language is of fundamental importance for strengthening the identity and culture of indigenous peoples, constituting an essential instrument of resistance, memory, and self-determination. In this context, the objective of this article was to understand how the process of linguistic revival, articulated through the project "Nheengatu: history, memory and cultural-linguistic identity of the Tapeba People," reaffirms the historical and territorial continuity of this people. Methodologically, this is a qualitative research study, of a basic nature and with an exploratory-descriptive approach, developed through a case study, participant observation, field notes, and content analysis. The results show that the revival of Nheengatu strengthens the intergenerational transmission of knowledge, expands the pedagogical and symbolic autonomy of the community, and aligns with the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032), reaffirming the urgency of public policies aimed at linguistic preservation. It is concluded that the rescue of Nheengatu constitutes a process of decolonizing knowledge, valuing Tapeba sociocultural practices, and strengthening their own ways of understanding and living in the semi-arid region.
