ESTIMATION OF THE EDSON QUEIROZ (SERROTE) RESERVOIR WATER LEVEL USING SATELLITE IMAGERY

Abstract

The monitoring of water reservoirs in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil is fundamental for water resources management in one of the country's most vulnerable areas to water scarcity. This study aims to define the water level of the Edson Queiroz Reservoir — popularly known as Açude Serrote — located in the municipality of Santa Quitéria, state of Ceará, Brazil, using satellite images processed on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. The methodology was based on extracting the reservoir flooding area from Landsat satellite images (5, 7 and 8) using a JavaScript algorithm developed in the GEE Code Editor. The water body was identified through HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value) color space transformation. Water level data were collected from the hydrological portal of the Ceará Water Resources Management Company (COGERH). By applying the least squares method in Scilab 6.0, the regression equation Y = 0.0077981X + 182.64673 was obtained, with a determination coefficient R² = 0.9742, indicating a very strong correlation between the flooding area and the altimetric level. The results validate the effectiveness of remote sensing via GEE as a complementary tool for water management in the semi-arid region.
